How to Do Swale Construction
-
Step 1: Choose the Location
Start by selecting the ideal location for your swale. Consider the natural slope of the land and choose an area where water runoff is a problem.
-
Step 2: Measure and Mark
Measure the length and width of the swale area and mark it out using stakes and string. This will serve as your guide during the construction process.
-
Step 3: Excavate the Swale
Use a shovel or an excavator to dig the swale along the marked area. Make sure to follow the natural slope of the land and create a gentle, shallow depression.
-
Step 4: Shape the Swale
Once the swale is excavated, shape the sides and bottom to ensure proper drainage. Smooth out any rough edges or bumps using a rake or shovel.
-
Step 5: Add Gravel
Spread a layer of gravel along the bottom of the swale to improve drainage. This will help prevent erosion and keep the swale functioning effectively.
-
Step 6: Plant Vegetation
Choose native plants that can tolerate wet conditions and plant them along the sides of the swale. These plants will help absorb excess water and prevent erosion.
-
Step 7: Maintain the Swale
Regularly inspect and maintain the swale to ensure it remains free of debris and functioning properly. Remove any weeds or obstructions that may hinder water flow.
